The future of congress – how pharma needs tailored approach

An EPG Health study in October 2021 – The Gaps between HCP Demand and Pharma Supply of Medical Information, highlighted that 78% of HCPs consider in-person congress and symposia to be important for learning with 70% also considering hybrid events as important. However, only 55% felt virtual events offered the same value for learning as in-person events.

A recent article in PMLiVE emphasised the opportunities that virtual and hybrid congresses will bring to pharma in years to come. The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) annual meeting in 2021, for example, still attracted nearly 33,000 attendees over its three online days, featuring 4,500 abstracts and 2,000 oral and poster presentations – approximately 75% of pre-pandemic figures. But the article also recommends that online and on-demand content needs to have engagement triggers and behavioural hooks to compensate for the lack of face-to-face contact.

With demand for in-person, fully virtual and hybrid events high and expected to remain so, the hybrid approach needs to ensure it can cater for the different audience requirements, whilst at the same time, continuing to deliver quality information. The hybrid format will no doubt help to attract a wider audience whilst also providing the added value of an in-person event. This is a win-win for congress organisers, however, it is twice the work.

Why relevance and impact are so important for HCPs

Making an impact attracts attention. Doesn’t it? Well, yes but only if the subject of the impact is relevant to the person being impacted. For it to resonate, it needs to be timed to perfection and the subject be of specific relevance to the recipient.
